Enable passive style. In the majority cases, you should use “passive mode” to keep away from network troubles. These commands give details, how to start passive mode for File Zilla for Windows. Answer: Being that this was a server-side issue, this item has no immediate solution. The solution is to confirm with the other party that their SFTP server is configured properly becuause the client-side requests are being initiated properly.

How do I turn on passive mode for FileZilla?

If you encounter problems using FileZilla, it is possible that a firewall on your computer or network is interfering with the connection. Changing the 'transfer mode' in the FileZilla settings will usually solve this.

On this page:

Enabling passive mode

In most cases, you should be using 'passive mode' to avoid network problems.

These instructions explain how to turn on passive mode for FileZilla (version 3.1.6) for Windows, although other versions are similar:

Software Caused Connection Abort Putty

  1. Start the FileZilla program if it isn't already running.
  2. Click Edit, Settings in the menu bar. The 'FileZilla Options' window will appear.
  3. Select Connections, then FTP on the left hand side.
  4. Choose the Passive (recommended) option.

It should look like this:

After you've made the changes, click OK to close the window, then try to connect and see if it has solved the problem.

Choosing active mode instead

Although it's very rare, we've also heard of a situation where you need to use 'active mode' instead of passive mode. In particular, you may need to do this if you see a 'Software caused connection abort' error message.

Just follow the steps above, but choose 'Active' instead.

What if it still doesn’t work?

We occasionally hear from customers who are using firewalls that prevent FTP in either mode.

In most cases, using the slightly more complicated SFTP instead will work, because it avoids all firewall problems.

Since i started with the direct administration of my own server, i literally used any tool that could make things easier. In the case of file transferences through SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol), the Filezilla client is without a doubt one of the best desktop applications to manage the files of my server in a graphical way.

One of the most common issues that you will have when you work often with this tool, is the timeout problem. This happens when for example, you decide to move some files in your server and you let Filezilla opened. If you don't do anything for a couple of minutes, once you come back and decide to execute another action, it will take a while until it happens again because filezilla will try to recover the last connection, however it won't so a new connection will be created:

That's it, you will see the followingError: FATAL ERROR: Network error: Software caused connection abort. To avoid this problem, you will have to open the settings of filezilla, on the FTP node, search for the FPT Keep-live section and check the checkbox 'Send FTP keep-alive commands':

Filezilla Fatal Error

As its warning specifies that no server should require this configuration, so if for some reason this is happening on your own server, you should check the SSH settings on your server.
